What does a missed call cost a home service business?

I work as a licensed HVAC engineer, so I spend a lot of time around contractors. The pattern I see most is simple: the phone rings while the owner is on a roof, under a house or driving between jobs, and nobody picks up.

What happens when a customer's call goes to voicemail?

Most of the time, they hang up and call the next company. Someone with a broken AC or a leaking water heater wants a person who can say "we can be there today." If you don't answer, the job usually goes to whoever does, and you never find out it was there.

How do I figure out what missed calls cost my business?

Use your own numbers, not someone else's. You need three things:

  1. Missed calls per week. Your phone carrier or call log shows calls you didn't answer and didn't return the same day.
  2. How many calls turn into jobs. Out of every ten calls you do answer, how many become paid work?
  3. Your average job. What a typical service call or install brings in.

Multiply them: missed calls × your booking rate × your average job. Do it for one month. That number is what's leaving through the phone, and it's usually bigger than owners expect.

Can't I just call people back?

You should, and it helps. But a callback an hour later often reaches someone who already booked another company. The calls that matter most, like emergencies and same-day work, are the ones that go to whoever answers first.

What actually fixes it?

Anything that makes sure every call gets an answer and the customer gets a next step right away:

The tool matters less than the result: more calls turn into booked jobs, and you stop losing evenings returning voicemails.

Is this worth paying for?

Only if the number you worked out above is bigger than what it costs. If you miss very few calls, it probably isn't. If you miss several a week, recovering even one or two jobs a month usually covers the cost. I'm happy to go through your call log with you and tell you plainly which side you're on.
